Every so often I hear someone reminisce about the days when school never started before Labor Day. I can remember my parents surprising us one year by packing us all into the car and driving from the mountains where we lived to Myrtle Beach for the Labor Day weekend. We didn’t have reservations; Dad had been able to take some vacation time rather unexpectedly. When we got home we all went back to work or back to school. I’m not sure if that was the time we came home from a trip and found a garage door window broken out or if I am confusing this trip with another. At any rate, Labor Day weekend is still a signal of a (more…)

What else do I need to say but “Thank you”? Thanks to Raphael Dessieu for his inspirational and informative sharing with us last night concerning the situation in Haiti and for his witness to the love and power of God in the middle of the disaster. Thanks to old friends Lex and Lee McDonald for planning his visit and having him with us. Thanks to Kim Jones and all of her helpers for the delicious “refreshments” (feast is a more appropriate word!). Thanks to David Hodges and the Praise Team for the beautiful music (Did they remind anyone of a thinner, younger version of the Mamas and the Papas?) Thanks to Phil Suggs for special music. Thanks to each one who came to worship with us and to learn first hand. Thanks to those who generously gave Raphael a love offering of over $200.

Of course, we need to thank God for all of the love and joy that is poured out us on a daily basis and for the support that comes even in the middle of long term recovery from disasters like the earthquake. Right now we need to thank God for all of the people who have given support to Haiti–and we need to pray for more help, for help going to the right places and being used in the right way. God bless each one.

Vacation Bible School is over half way over and we have been constantly amazed by the excitement and attendance that we have experienced this week. 127 children have been in attendance, learning about the ways in which we celebrate God’s Creation. What a blessing this has been.

Looking ahead, now, to Sunday evening, we are looking forward to another blessing for the community. At 6PM in the Trinity Center we will welcome the Rev. Raphael Dessieu, former president of the Methodist Church of Haiti, and pastor of a Haitian Mission in Tampa. He will come with pictures, with a testimony and with a willingness to share. The community is invited to join us.

God bless each one. Gene Feagin, Pastor

Our Annual VBS began this morning with a record-breaking 132 children registered and 116 in attendance. Thanks to our VBS team led by Teresa Anderson we were ready and able to teach and share the good news of God’s creation and the gift of new creation as we see it through Jesus Christ. In 30+ years of ministry this has been the best attended VBS I have every taken part in. The teachers, the shepherds, the parents and the students have all done an awesome job! Imagine what we can do when we all give so much of ourselves. More to follow! Gene Feagin, Pastor

Don’t worry I’m not going to take the easy route and make some remark like, “If you think this is hot…” I know that this is hot enough for anyone! At the same time, the heat is only a small part of what is going on in our world. When I walked into the church building this morning there were over 40 people hanging around in the parking lot getting ready for the trip to CPCC to see “Frog and Toad.” When I got inside the building there was a boardwalk starting in front of Mr. Zachary’s Sunday School Classroom and going to the front of Miss Cathy’s class. Then, in the Trinity Center… well, what can I say? There are palm trees (as my friend Noah said when he and his mom and sister walked down the hall, “Paper palm trees.”) There are fish, there are monkeys…. Of course, everybody knows why. (more…)

We normally don’t publish a newsletter from the end of June until the end of July, so we would encourage you to check back by this website every so often  for updates and changes in programming plans. The Summer Program book has most of the information about plans for trips etc. Remember to contact Alice Smith or the church office to check on spaces on the bus. In addition to the trips, we are planning some special worship services. In our July NewSong Contemporary Service we will have (more…)

Summer is a time for rest and relaxation. When things are as hot as they have been in York lately, one finds oneself spending more time in those quiet activities that lead to reflection. School is out and the children have hardly had time to get bored yet, but many parents are looking for activities to keep the children entertained. All of the educators we know have reminded young people to keep reading and to keep their minds active. Many have reading lists to get through in order to be prepared for (more…)

One of the “bells and whistles” that Jason Broadwater and the folks at Revenflo included in the design for this website is the capacity for folks to comment on the posts that are on here. Since the website was set up, we have had about (more…)

Sometimes I find my stack of clippings that I want to use for reflections on this blog and on my page in the newsletter getting stacked up, and I’m not sure that some of them will make a full page. For example, (more…)

One of my favorite Easter hymns begins, “Easter people, raise your voices.” What does it mean to be “Easter people” though? I’ve been reading John 20:19-31 in preparation for worship this coming Sunday and I think I see a hint. I have also been reading Acts 5:27-32, which is set in Jerusalem after the risen Jesus has ascended into heaven and the Holy Spirit has come upon the disciples. Taken together these passages of scripture point to a big change in the disciples of Jesus. (more…)
