Last Saturday, a bus load of Trinity folks rode to Newberry to attend a concert by the Spirit Singers at the Newberry Opera House. Two of our young people, Chris Suggs and Hunter Ligon are a part of this talented group. The concert was powerful. Our young people both distinguished themselves in a group of talented people. I don’t need to tell you this, however, since you remember the visit the Spirit Singers made to Trinity not too long ago. These young people can teach us a lesson about being the church. In fact, they can teach us several lessons.

First they teach us the importance of using the talent that God gives. To become a part of the Spirit Singers, the young people go through an audition process. They are all talented. God has given each of them a beautiful voice. Many of them are talented with other musical instruments–one young lady played the violin on Saturday night; both of the young men from Trinity are proficient in other instruments. They use the talents that God has given them. What about us? God gives each of us talents to use. How can we best use them for God’s glory?

Secondly the Spirit Singers can teach us the importance of practice. While the new group met for a short time in June before starting out on their tours, they practice each time they get together. They are serious in learning their material. They are serious in learning the parts that they are to speak. Their rehearsals and practice show up in successful, worshipful performances. The more we practice living the Christian life, the better we can do at it. The more we practice bearing witness to our faith through the way we treat other people, the better we can be. The more we practice sharing God’s love, the easier it is for us.

The Spirit Singers can teach us the importance of fellowship. After all, you can see these young people and their adult leaders and see that they genuinely like each other. I am sure that there are some personality clashes, though nobody has told me this, but it is clear that the group genuinely loves being together. We all need the kind of strength that we get from this sort of fellowship.

We can learn about the importance of living as God’s children. We can learn about the importance of cooperation. We can learn that as God blesses us, he expects us to share our blessings.

Most of all, I have learned that all of us, from the youngest to the oldest, can still share the love of God. Thanks, Spirit Singers,

    Gene Feagin, Pastor
